Responsible AI use at work is becoming a core element of AI literacy in organisations. Therefore Safer Internet Day on 10 February 2026 comes with a fitting theme: “AI and me.” In everyday life, it raises questions about trust, influence, and healthy boundaries. For organisations, the practical version of that question is:
What kind of relationship are we building with AI at work in 2026 and which boundaries ensure it stays helpful, safe, and trustworthy?
AI in enterprise is already part of daily workflows: drafting text, summarising information, generating learning assets, supporting communication, and speeding up routine tasks. That’s the upside, but a downside of AI is its ability to accelerate problems in organisations that can spread quickly: Sensitive data is shared too casually, incorrect outputs get reused without checks, and manipulation becomes more convincing when messages are AI-generated.
This isn’t a call to slow down. It’s a call to make responsible AI use easy in practice.
The workplace reality:
Most issues with AI start with typical behaviour
When AI use goes wrong inside organisations, it usually isn’t because someone intended harm. It’s because everyday shortcuts stack up over time:
- A consultant shares more context than they should to get a "better" answer.
- A sales rep forwards an AI-written message email that "sounds right".
- An administrator acts on an urgent request without verifying it.
If you want to reduce risk without killing momentum, policies alone won’t achieve it. People need a small set of rules that are clear enough to remember on a busy day.
Four boundaries every organisation should define
Alongside existing AI legislation, there are also many “good AI rules” out there: the difference is whether such rules can work and be applied at speed. These four cover a large share of real-world risk:
1) Don't share sensitive information with unapproved tools
If it contains customer data, employee data, confidential documents, credentials, or internal strategy, it does not go into a chatbot. If you wouldn’t paste it into a public website, don’t paste it into AI.
2) Treat AI output as a draft, not a fact
AI sounds confident, but that doesn’t make it correct. If the output influences decisions, compliance, customers, or security, it needs a review. For anything important: verify critical claims with trusted sources.
3) Verify high-risk requests out-of-band
AI makes social engineering cheaper and more polished. The classic signs still apply: urgency, authority, secrecy, and unusual process changes. If a message asks for payment, access change, data release, or another sensitive action – confirm the request via a second trusted channel (phone call, Teams, a known number)
4) Keep accountability human and explicit
“AI said so” is never an explanation. Every AI-assisted output needs a clear owner who reviewed it, stands behind it, and can explain how it was checked.
These four boundaries are not “anti-AI”. They are what make AI adoption sustainable: they protect people, processes, and trust without blocking the benefits.

In learning and development, AI can be a genuine accelerator: creating first drafts faster, tailoring content for different audiences, and helping people find the right learning at the right moment. But speed only helps if quality stays high. A reliable approach is simple: AI drafts, humans validate, systems govern.
Security awareness also needs to evolve. Most people can spot a bad phishing email when they have time. The real test is a busy day, when the message looks plausible and the request feels urgent. AI raises the quality of manipulation. The response needs to be equally practical: train the behaviours that prevent incidents (verify, escalate, report), not just the definitions.

- Report early.
If something feels off (a message, request, tool behaviour, or accidental sharing), report quickly.
Turning boundaries into behaviours
